Triton College Transfer Center builds relationships, hosts admissions visits for student transfer success

Triton College is passionate about cultivating relationships with academic partners, and it is through these relationships the college welcomes four-year colleges and universities to campus to meet with students to discuss the transfer process. The Transfer Center is the college’s new hub of information and resources for students interested in transferring to earn a bachelor’s degree.

“Going to the Transfer Center has helped me a lot with completing applications, writing essays, and helping me make deadlines,” said Jonathan Esparza, a Triton College student who is applying to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

In addition to building a pipeline of prepared students that are ready to successfully embark on the transfer process, the center will cultivate existing relationships and build new relationships with academic partners, said Nelly Marcial, transfer center director.

A recent result of new relationship building efforts is an admissions representative visit from Columbia University of New York City.

The center is excited to welcome Columbia University to campus Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2:30–3:30 p.m., in the B Building, Rooms B-102/103. It is the first time the Ivy League institution has sent an admissions representative to meet with Triton students about the transfer process.

“We have quality students, but many of our students are first generation college students. They need exposure to all different types of institutions to learn about what opportunities are available to them,” said Kevin Li, dean, School of Arts and Sciences.

For example, the Columbia University admissions representative will not only discuss the requirements for the transfer process and degree program options, but it will also be an opportunity for Triton students to learn about study abroad programs and the several hundred different types of on campus student organizations and clubs.

The Columbia University visit is just one of several dozen college and university visits that the Transfer Center has planned for the remainder of the school year. A local university and a top transfer recipient of Triton students, Northeastern Illinois University, will host a mini transfer fair on Tuesday, Feb. 11 with on-site admissions. In March, the Transfer Center will host the Private Illinois Colleges and University (PICU) Fair.

“Attending a four-year institution will change many of our students’ lives. We are encouraging not only local top-tier institutions, such as the University of Chicago, but also the BIG 10 and Ivy League, to stop by Triton on their admissions tours,” Li said.
