Equivalency courses that help you prepare for your GED®, TASC, and HiSET exams.

- Must be an Illinois resident
- Provide a picture ID with current address
- Must be at least 16 years old and not enrolled in high school. High School withdrawal form (download PDF).
- Classes are not intended for individuals on temporary and student visas

English as a Second Language (ESL)*

English as a Second Language (ESL) courses are designed to help non-native English speakers develop reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
There are 7 levels of ESL instruction, from basic to advanced.
Classes are offered in either a 15 week session or 10 week session.
Summer classes offer conversation 3 times a week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, for 4 hours each day. Summer classes run for 5 weeks.
15 week classes start in January and August and meet twice a week. Morning classes are offered on Mondays and Wednesdays. Evening classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
10 week skills classes are offered throughout the year. Morning classes are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Evening classes are offered on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Morning classes take place from 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM.
Evening classes take place from 6:00 PM – 9:30 PM.
ESL students interested in developing their computer skills may register for a Computer Basics class, available in English and Spanish. Classes are offered throughout the year.

Are you thinking of becoming a citizen of the United States?
The first step is to be prepared for the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) test, which consists of an oral interview and a written test on U.S. history, and federal and state government functions.
If you speak, read and write English fluently, you are ready to fill out your citizenship application right away. If you do not, Triton's Adult Education department offers English as a Second Language (ESL) classes throughout the year.
Our citizenship class will prepare you for the citizenship examination and the interview. The class is free of charge.

High School Equivalency program courses are designed to prepare students to successfully complete the high school equivalency examinations, including the GED®, HiSET®, and TASC.
We offer various levels of language arts and math courses to help students gain the knowledge and skills needed to prepare for a high school equivalency exam.
The class schedule is as follows:
Language Arts
Mondays & Wednesdays
9:00 AM – 12:30 PM or 6:00 – 9:30 PM
Mathematics
Tuesdays & Thursdays
9:00 AM – 12:30 PM or 6:00 – 9:30 PM
Students may take either one class or two at the same time.
Constitution
We also offer a Constitution course throughout the year for students who have not passed the Constitution Test in high school. The class is taught over five Saturdays from 9 AM – 12 PM.
Access to Literacy Program
The Access to Literacy Program at Triton College offers free tutoring services to adults age 17 and over whose reading, writing or numeracy/math skills are below the sixth-grade level. Volunteer tutors provide one-on-one and small group tutoring in English for Adult Basic Education (ABE) students or English as a Second Language (ESL) students.
Triton College’s Access to Literacy Program is an adult volunteer literacy grant program funded by the Illinois State Library, a Division of the Office of the Secretary of State.

Bridge to College and Careers
The goal of this program is to bridge the gap between the student’s initial skills set and the field of interest by offering the opportunity to complete a high school equivalency while also exploring career specific skills through various pathways:
- Healthcare
- Healthcare Careers.
- Medical Terminology.
- Office Administration
- STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
Integrated Education and Training (IET)
The goal of this program is to complete a high school equivalency while also preparing for industry-recognized credentials, certifications and employer-specific training programs through integrated, skills-focused instruction and support. In addition to preparing for the GED exam, students work towards receiving certification and prepare for the workforce for the following fields:
- Automotive Technology
- Health Science:
- Phlebotomy.
- Pharmacy Technician.
Special Programs
- Career Awareness for GED and ESL Students.
In this course, students will assess their skills, identify their career interests and explore jobs in a variety of career fields. - Career Exploration for GED and ESL Students.
In this course, students assess their skills, identify their career interests, explore career paths and create an individual education and career plan which will include action items and a timeline for getting into college or a career of choice. - ESL Transitions: Academic Writing I.
- ESL Transitions: Academic Writing II.
In these courses, students learn the requirements of the English essay writing process by developing ideas, editing and proofreading. Students develop skills for college writing.
Scholarship Programs
Available for Triton College Adult Education students who have completed or graduated from the ESL or GED Program.
The following scholarships are available for Adult Education students only:
- Board of Trustees Scholarship:
- Funded by Triton College.
- Covers 12 credits of in-district tuition in any subject.
- Eligibility – To apply, a student must have completed Triton’s ESL program or passed the High School Equivalency Exam (GED or HiSET).
- Open to Adult Education students regardless of immigration status. No Social Security number is required.
- APPLY FOR THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES SCHOLARSHIP
- Westlake Health Careers Scholarship
- Funded by a grant from the Westlake Health Foundation.
- Covers in-district tuition, fees and materials for credit or non-credit healthcare programs. Can be used over multiple years.
- Eligibility – To apply, a student must have completed Triton’s ESL Program or passed the High School Equivalency Exam (GED or HiSET).
- Applicants must be able to pass a criminal background check and must be authorized to work in the United States.
